Upgrades consume photons to be built, so the more photons you collect, the more improvements you can make. Increase the speed of your ship to thousands of times the speed of light to reach the stars at the edge of the universe faster, improve the range of attraction of photons present in outer space, and enhance the ability to transform photons into energy, turning each collected photon into much more energy that you can spend on more upgrades.
